Located in the northeastern part of Tennessee, Grainger County is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The county is known for its natural beauty and, its predominant role in Tennessee history, and the work ethic and friendly nature of its people.

While the county itself is rural in nature, it borders Knox County, home to Knoxville, the state’s third largest city. Knoxville provides advanced healthcare, sporting events, shopping, cultural activities and other amenities, but Grainger County also has plenty to offer in terms of recreation, quality of life, industry, and education. The county is home to two major Tennessee Valley Authority Lakes, two rivers, and numerous streams, making much of the recreational activities water-based. Boat launching ramps and public picnic areas are plentiful along the waterways, so fishing, boating, water skiing are extremely popular.

Cost of Living - In addition to the exquisite natural surroundings, Grainger County offers a cost of living substantially below the national average. Goods and services as well as housing costs are extremely affordable.

Climate - Summers can be hot in East Tennessee, but in Grainger County, there’s always the relief brought by the nearby riverfronts and streams, which are cool even on the 90+ degree days that can be the norm for much of the summer. Winter is relatively mild as well, with little snow and few days below the low- to mid-30s.

Economy - Major industries in the Grainger County include textile processing, furniture and mobile home manufacturing, metal working, and trailer production.

Transportation - Grainger County is located at the junction of U.S. highways 11W and 25E and state highway 92, which provide easy access to surrounding counties and metropolitan areas. Interstate 40 is 30 miles from the county seat of Rutledge. Motor freight service is provided by companies located in nearby cities and commercial air service is available through nearby Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson airport.

Education - Grainger County’s 3000 students are served by seven schools in the Grainger County School System. Students within the system consistently score above state levels on standardized tests and enjoy quality instructional programs on all levels.
